Students from Epping Boys High take part in Sunnyfield’s School Work Experience program
Choong, Thomas and Adam, students from Epping Boys High in Years 10 and 11, have been participating in Sunnyfield’s Work Experience program once a fortnight with Sunnyfield’s Employment Services team.
One of the goals of the program is for students to develop workplace skills to help with their future endeavours. The program is tailored to each student through identifying their goals, assessing their skills and talents and creating a program plan that will support them on their path to meaningful employment.
The program gives students the opportunity to experience a commercial work environment, completing projects that foster skills in team work, active listening and effective communication, problem-solving and time management, as well as refining hard skills like the use of workplace tools in a safe manner and correct use of PPE.
Developing skills and experience in a commercial environment
Their first project was to put together a display stand for Nexium which was built in 3 stages. This required the students to work together as a team, with each student allocated their own individual task, that when brought together would complete one Nexium Stand.
Through effective communication and teamwork, the students achieved the tasks set before them in no time, feeling proud of their work when completed. Choong is happy when he comes to Sunnyfield, saying “I work very hard, the other Sunnyfield people help me out”
At the end of each week, the students write in their diaries about the work they have accomplished to show their parents.
